Greetings to all of you in showbiz and on the worldwide web. I haven’t written in a while, and I hope this year is turning out to be a great year for you all.
While those of us at ShowBizCentral have been preparing to launch a brand new suite of tools for casting directors, which we have been designing and building over the last year, the world of Hollywood and show business around the world has been evolving at a faster and faster pace.
Most everyone working in the biz, and those trying to get their first big break in the biz, are understandably focused on finding and securing employment, pitching and selling scripts, booking auditions…and not paying much attention to what lies around the next curve in the road.
The business was once populated by three networks and six studios. That expanded long ago to include premium and basic cable channels, and in recent years further expanded to include streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.
The next big shift is already happening. Apple, Google, and other big tech companies are becoming industry players, content creators, and distributors…and have literally billions of dollars to spend on content.
If you understand that your career in entertainment is like driving on a curvy mountain road at night, I recommend that you don’t drive with your lights off and fiddling with your radio or cell phone. In other words, try to pay attention to where the business is going.
In the immortal words of Wayne Gretzky, “I don’t skate to the puck, I skate to where the puck is going.” For a peek into one view of the very near future of Hollywood, check out this article by Nick Bolton from Vanity Fair.
